We built DayCanvas on a fundamental principle: your journal belongs to you, not to us.
This is not marketing language. It is a design philosophy that shapes every feature we build. You should be able to leave DayCanvas at any time with all your data intact. You should be able to create backup copies in formats that do not require our software to read. You should be able to print, publish, or share your journal in whatever form serves you.
Export options are not an afterthought or a premium feature. They are a core commitment to user ownership.
PDF Export
PDF is the universal document format. A PDF file looks the same on any device, any operating system, any printer. PDF files created today will be readable decades from now.
Our PDF export transforms your journal entries into beautifully formatted documents.
Design options. Choose from several layouts optimized for different purposes. A compact layout fits more entries per page for efficient printing. A spacious layout provides room for margin notes. A presentation layout creates a visually striking document for sharing.
Date range selection. Export your entire journal, a specific year, a custom date range, or hand-selected entries. Create a PDF of just last month, or produce a comprehensive archive of everything you have ever written.
Customization. Select fonts, adjust margins, choose whether to include photos and metadata like weather and location. Create a minimal text export or a rich multimedia document.
Print-ready output. Our PDF export produces files optimized for both screen viewing and physical printing. Standard page sizes, proper margins, and appropriate fonts ensure your printed journal looks professional.

Word Document Export

Edit and extend. Add annotations, combine entries with other content, or use journal entries as starting points for longer writing projects.
Compatibility. Word format works with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages, and countless other applications. If you need to work with your journal in another tool, Word export makes it possible.

LaTeX Export

Customizable templates. Choose from several LaTeX document classes or provide your own template. The export adapts to your preferred LaTeX workflow.
Integration ready. Export files work directly in Overleaf, standard LaTeX installations, or any LaTeX-compatible environment.

How to Export
Exporting your journal is straightforward.
In DayCanvas, navigate to Settings and select Export. Choose your desired format from the available options.
Select the scope of your export: all entries, a date range, or specific selected entries. Configure any format-specific options like layout, fonts, or included metadata.
Start the export. For larger journals, export happens in the background. You will receive a notification when your file is ready to download.
Download your exported file and use it however you wish. There are no watermarks, no limitations, no restrictions on what you do with your own data.
Export Without Limits
Some journaling platforms limit exports to encourage lock-in or charge extra for export features. We believe this is wrong.
Export in DayCanvas is unlimited and included with every account. Export daily if you want. Export your entire history repeatedly. Create backups in multiple formats. There is no cap, no throttle, no premium tier required.
This unlimited export is possible because we do not want to trap you. We want to earn your continued use through quality and service, not through making it difficult to leave.
Backup Strategy
Export options enable robust backup strategies for your journal.
Regular exports. Schedule periodic exports to create versioned backups. Monthly PDF exports, for example, create a rolling archive of your journal that exists independently of DayCanvas.
Multiple formats. Export in different formats for different purposes. PDF for long-term archival, Word for editability, LaTeX for technical projects.
Multiple locations. Store exported files in multiple places: local storage, external drives, cloud backup services. If something happens to any one location, your journal survives.
The time you invest in your journal deserves protection. Export options make that protection possible.
